In Search of the Dimmest Stars was created on Sound and Music's Embedded programme as part of the Embedded: Radio 3's Composer in 3 project and premiered in collaboration with BBC Radio 3.

The title is a quotation from Rebecca Elson's poem Let There Always Be Light (Searching for Dark Matter). The piece was later incorporated into the composer's Clarinet Quintet, At Night, as the second movement.
